BAI Event “Blockchain Technology in Support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”
The innovation forum “Blockchain Technology in Support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was successfully held today at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The event formed part of a series of meetings aimed at discussing the benefits and potential applications of blockchain technology, following the call of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to embrace emerging technologies capable of accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
BAI Founder and Chairman Alexandru Cujba opened the event and announced the launch of Blockchain Alliance International (BAI), a newly established non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable and inclusive development through the use of innovative technologies.
The keynote speaker, H.E. Mrs. Milica Pejanović Đurišić, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Montenegro to the United Nations, congratulated the organizers on this timely initiative and reiterated the importance of emerging technologies in advancing the objectives of the United Nations. Mr. Amir Dossal, Founder and President of the Global Partnerships Forum, and Ms. Anna Fälth, Policy Advisor at UN Women, also presented their organizations’ perspectives on technological development and welcomed the multi-stakeholder approach to deploying technology in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Approximately 40 ambassadors, senior diplomats, and representatives of Member State Missions, including Montenegro, Belarus, Tajikistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Honduras, and Paraguay, attended the meeting. Participants also included representatives of international organizations such as the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission, UN Women, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as academia, private sector companies, and civil society organizations, including China Ethnic International Economic Cooperation Co., the Chinese Institute of Digital Assets (CIDA), Singapore Tai-E Cyber-Tech Pte. Ltd., Davox Technology AG, Tesra Supernet, ChainDD, Achain, and Zhongdu High-tech.
Participants discussed the role of blockchain technology in supporting the implementation and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals, technological trends shaping the global economy, and the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in developing innovative financial and technological solutions for sustainable development.
Professor Jiaming Zhu, a distinguished economist and Director of CIDA, delivered a keynote presentation emphasizing the importance of blockchain technology as an infrastructure capable of addressing trust deficits and enhancing cooperation in global development.
The forum also provided an opportunity for Blockchain Alliance International to establish new partnerships and strengthen cooperation with institutions and individuals interested in the deployment of blockchain technologies around the world.
The event marked an important step in BAI’s cooperation with the United Nations and the broader international community. The outcomes of the Forum and future BAI activities will complement the efforts outlined in the United Nations Secretary-General’s Strategy on New Technologies, which seeks to harness emerging technologies in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development while ensuring alignment with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
