BAI Observes 9th STI Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation
Representatives of Blockchain Alliance International attended the 9th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum), convened by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on May 9-10, 2024. The Forum serves as a key platform for Member States and global stakeholders to review progress on STI-related commitments, exchange good practices, and strengthen cooperation in harnessing innovation and technology for sustainable development. Digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, data systems, and emerging decentralized architectures, were central to many discussions throughout the event.
The STI Forum provided a unique opportunity for high-level dialogue on how science, technology, and innovation can meaningfully accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while addressing persistent gaps in access, infrastructure, and skills. Sessions emphasized inclusive approaches that enable developing countries to participate more fully in the global innovation ecosystem, spotlighting the role of digital technologies in areas such as education, public services, climate resilience, health systems, and economic inclusion.
BAI closely followed key thematic sessions and side events, noting the strong focus on multi-stakeholder cooperation, public-private partnerships, and capacity building that were consistently highlighted by Member States, UN officials, and technology experts alike. The Forum underscored that advances in digital infrastructure, governance, and ethical frameworks are essential for unlocking the full potential of technologies like AI, blockchain, and Web3 in support of sustainable development.
Looking ahead, BAI plans to deepen its engagement with the STI Forum and related intergovernmental processes by strengthening partnerships, contributing to thematic discussions, and facilitating dialogue between policy makers, technology innovators, civil society, and academic communities. By enhancing its participation, BAI aims to support more inclusive, evidence-based approaches to science and technology governance that accelerate SDG implementation and bridge digital divides worldwide.
