BAI President Delivers Keynote at MetaEra Summit 2023 in Singapore

The Founder and Executive President of Blockchain Alliance International (BAI), Ambassador Alexandru Cujba, delivered a keynote address at the MetaEra Summit 2023, held on 12 September 2023 in Singapore. Addressing an international audience of Web3, blockchain, and metaverse stakeholders, Ambassador Cujba focused on the role of emerging technologies – particularly blockchain – in supporting the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In his remarks, Ambassador Cujba provided an overview of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by UN Member States in 2015 as a comprehensive framework to advance people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships. He underscored the urgency of accelerating implementation, noting that global progress remains off track as the international community approaches the 2030 deadline. Against this backdrop, he highlighted the importance of science, data, and innovation, as well as the relevance of upcoming global processes, including the Summit of the Future and the adoption of a Global Digital Compact, aimed at shaping an open, secure, and inclusive digital future.

Ambassador Cujba emphasized that the rapid evolution from early Internet technologies to today’s data-driven, decentralized Web3 environment has fundamentally reshaped economic and social development. While governments and international organizations play a central role in setting norms and policies, he stressed that they cannot act alone. Effective partnerships with the private sector, academia, civil society, and technology innovators are essential to closing digital divides and ensuring that emerging technologies deliver tangible development impact.

Focusing on blockchain technology, Ambassador Cujba outlined its potential as a powerful tool for advancing sustainability, citing applications in climate finance, digital identity and financial inclusion, transparent supply chains, biodiversity protection, and humanitarian assistance. He also referenced ongoing initiatives within the United Nations system – led by entities such as the World Food Programme, UNDP, UNICEF, and UNODC – that demonstrate the growing, though still emerging, role of blockchain in improving transparency, efficiency, and accountability in development and humanitarian operations.

In concluding his address, Ambassador Cujba highlighted Asia’s increasingly important role in shaping the global blockchain ecosystem, given the region’s leadership in technology innovation, fintech, digital payments, supply chains, and government-led digital initiatives. He reaffirmed BAI’s mission to bridge the gap between the diplomatic and technological communities by providing a platform for dialogue and partnership, enabling blockchain, artificial intelligence, and Web3 technologies to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development worldwide.
